Common Questions from First-Time Charter Fishing Customers
Is it safe for kids?
Yes! Captain Eric ensures every charter follows Coast Guard safety standards. The boat is equipped with properly sized life jackets for all ages, and trips are planned around calm weather conditions, making it a fun and safe experience for children.
Do we need fishing experience?
Not at all. Whether you’ve never held a rod before or you’re a seasoned angler, Captain Eric tailors the trip to your comfort level. He’s great with beginners, families, and especially kids—teaching everything from how to cast to reeling in your first big salmon.
Can we keep what we catch?
Absolutely! All legal catches are yours to keep. Captain Eric will even clean and fillet the fish for you so they’re ready to cook or take to a local restaurant for a fresh meal.
How many people can go?
Our charter boat accommodates up to 6 passengers—perfect for families, small groups, or even a private fishing adventure.
What should we bring with us?
Bring weather-appropriate clothing (layers are best), sunscreen, sunglasses, snacks, and any drinks you’d like. A cooler is recommended for transporting your cleaned catch home. We’ll provide the rods, reels, tackle, and all fishing gear.
When is the best time to go salmon fishing?
Salmon fishing on Lake Michigan is best from late spring through early fall, with peak action usually in July and August. Morning trips typically offer the calmest water and most active fish.
Where do we meet for the charter?
Charters depart from a marina in South Haven, Michigan—you’ll receive exact directions and parking info when you book your trip.
Do we need a fishing license?
Yes. Anyone age 17 and older needs a valid Michigan all-species fishing license. These can be purchased online through the Michigan DNR website or at local bait shops before your trip.
What kind of fish will we catch?
While salmon are the main target—especially Chinook (King) and Coho Salmon—we also catch Lake Trout, Steelhead (Rainbow Trout), and Brown Trout depending on the season and conditions.
What if the weather is bad?
Your safety comes first. If conditions are unsafe due to wind or storms, Captain Eric will cancel or reschedule your trip. You won’t be charged for weather-related cancellations, and we’ll work with you to find another day that works.
